Truth be told I don’t normally go for cover songs. Sure I thought Me First and the Gimme Gimme’s were entertaining for a nano but beyond that I just never got into cover songs.
I will say in my travels I have come across a few that hold a permanent position in my musical wheel house. Each one has some beautiful memories attached to it (gotta love music for its ability to take you barreling back in time) and all three happen to be by groups led by females.
I really was into female driven groups for most of my teenage years and since it was the 1990’s it was a great time to be into that. There were so many great groups popping up with strong female members. It was before the candy glossing of female bands today. It was gritty and it was new. And I was in my glory as an angry young girl. From Bikini Kill to L7 to Garbage to Seven Year Bitch to Heavens To Betsy, the list goes and on.
I thought that I would share my top three cover songs performed by females. These songs are near and dear to me.
Passenger : Lunachicks
The Lunachicks are this great theatrical punk band from NYC. They formed in the late 1980’s and disbanded (unfortunately) around 2000. The Passenger was originally performed by Iggy Pop.
Happiness is a Warm Gun : The Breeders
The Breeders are one of my favorite branches off of an awesome 1980’s band. Kim Deal was the bass player for The Pixies and later formed The Breeders with her sister Kelley. Happiness is a Warm Gun was originally performed by none other then The Beatles.
And finally my favorite cover song.
13 : Magnapop
Magnapop is a little known alt-group out of Atlanta. I believe that they are really underrated and deserve a listen. 13 is an anthem of youth for pretty much anyone born between 1963-1975. It was originally performed by Big Star.
SIDE NOTE: Big Star has been sited by many of the grunge bands of the 1990’s as a huge influence. They are awesome and I highly recommend checking them out!
There you have it.
My top three cover songs.
As a bonus I’ve added links to the name of the original artists. These links are my favorite songs by those bands.
Let me know what you think, better yet I would love to hear some of your favorite covers. I’m always scouting for new music.
